Spies also dominated the second race, but this time without any pressure from his rivals. Xaus again scored points for BMW, this time with a positive ninth place. Both Aprilia riders crashed out, Biaggi suffering a hairline crack in his foot in the process, but remounting to finish 21st, while John Hopkins (Stiggy Racing Honda) did not take the start of race 2, the still-injured American totally exhausted after his race 1 efforts.

Good news for Haga

Good news has emerged from the Derby Royal Infirmary regarding the condition of Ducati Xerox rider Noriyuki Haga. A further CT scan on the Japanese rider revealed that what were thought to be fractures of the T8 and T9 vertebrae could actually be the remains of a previous incident. This immediately brought a halt to the scheduled operation.

"This is good news" declared team manager Davide Tardozzi, "but of course it needs to be confirmed tomorrow, Monday. Nori will for sure undergo an operation on the ulna bone of his right forearm, because it is a displaced fracture and there is also a suspected fracture of the scapula (shoulder blade) bone. It is clear however that if he really doesn't need to have an operation to the vertebrae he could get away with a month's rest".
